About The Expat News
The Expat News publishes short, practical English-language briefings for the international community living in and around Lisbon and Cascais, Portugal. We follow official Portuguese sources — municipalities (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Câmara Municipal de Cascais), transport operators (Carris, CP, Metro), the immigration and asylum agency (AIMA), civil protection (ANEPC) and more — and explain what actually changes for you.

Our mission & coverage priorities
Internationals in the Lisbon–Cascais region often miss local news simply because it is published only in Portuguese. Our mission is to close that gap: to surface the official decisions, service changes and public-interest information that affect daily life — residency and paperwork, public transport, housing and local government, weather and safety, culture and community — and to present them clearly, accurately and without hype. We prioritise information from primary, official sources over commentary.
Editorial & publishing standards
We do not copy or translate full articles. Every briefing is written in original English, summarises the verifiable facts, explains why they matter for international residents, and links back to the official source so you can read the primary document yourself. We separate fact from guidance, we do not editorialise inside news briefings, and we label anything that is analysis or opinion.
Sourcing & verification
Each briefing is built from named, official, primary sources — a government body, municipality, transport operator or public agency — which is cited and linked in every article. We do not publish rumour, unverified social-media claims, or second-hand reports presented as fact. Where the facts are provisional or a source is preliminary, we say so. If we cannot verify a claim against an official source, we do not publish it.
Corrections policy
Accuracy matters more than speed. If we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and transparently. Spotted an error? Email hello@theexpatnews.pt with the article and the issue; substantive corrections are noted on the updated article.
Ethics, independence & diversity
We are editorially independent. We do not accept payment to publish, alter or suppress a news briefing, and any sponsored or commercial content — should we introduce it — will be clearly labelled and kept separate from the newsroom. We serve a diverse international audience of many nationalities and backgrounds, and we aim to cover the region fairly and inclusively, in plain English that assumes no prior local knowledge.
How we use AI (transparency)
The Expat News uses automated tooling to monitor official Portuguese sources and to help draft briefings in English from those primary sources. Every briefing is derived from a cited official source, follows the sourcing and verification standards above, and sensitive topics are held to a higher bar (see below). We are transparent about this because trust depends on it: our value is accurate, well-sourced, clearly-written local news — not volume for its own sake.
Ownership & funding
The Expat News is an independently owned and operated digital publication based in the Lisbon region of Portugal. It is not owned or controlled by any government, political party, or the organisations it reports on. The publication is currently self-funded; if we introduce advertising, sponsorship or membership in future, we will disclose it here.
Sensitive topics
Immigration, tax, legal, health and safety topics are handled with extra care and clearly marked. Our briefings are general information only and are not legal, tax, medical or immigration advice. Always confirm with the relevant official body before making decisions.

Photography is sourced from Openverse under Creative Commons licences that permit commercial use and adaptation, and is credited on each article.
Privacy & cookies
We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which briefings are read — nothing more. We do not run advertising cookies, we do not sell data, and we do not build profiles of individual readers. Analytics cookies are set only after you press “Accept” on the cookie notice; if you decline, Google Consent Mode keeps analytics storage switched off and we receive only anonymous, cookieless counts. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser, which brings the notice back.
