What happened

Unions representing workers at Metro de Lisboa have filed notices for partial strike action on two dates in October: 28 October and 30 October.

The notices follow an earlier stoppage that took place on 14 October.

According to Time Out Lisboa, the partial strikes mean the Metro is expected to open at 10:00 on the affected days, rather than at its usual start time.

Why it matters for international residents

The Lisbon Metro is a primary way of getting around the city for many residents, commuters, students and visitors. Partial strikes can disrupt morning routines even when the network is not fully closed, because the system starts running later than normal.

If you rely on the Metro for an early commute, a school run, a flight or train connection, or a morning appointment on 28 or 30 October, your usual travel plan may not work as expected.

What to do next

  • Note the dates 28 and 30 October in your calendar and assume Metro services will begin at 10:00.
  • Plan an alternative for any morning journey on those days — bus, tram, train, bike, taxi or ride-hailing.
  • Allow extra time if you need to reach a station, airport or long-distance rail connection.
  • Check the Metro de Lisboa website and official channels closer to the dates, as strike arrangements can change.
